Surveillance planning guide
Security camera planning for DFW businesses
A useful camera system records the areas that matter and makes footage practical to find. Envoy no longer installs or services cameras. Use this guide to prepare for a conversation about a commercial surveillance system.

Plan coverage around real questions
Identify what each camera needs to show: an entrance, a loading area, a cash-handling point, or activity around a property. Discuss lighting, the distance to the subject, and whether you need to recognize details or simply see movement. These goals help an installer choose appropriate locations and equipment.
Consider recording and access to footage
Ask how long recordings will be retained, who can view them, and how relevant clips are exported. Retention depends on the system configuration and available storage; it should be part of the project discussion.
Remote viewing should use properly managed user access. Tell the provider how many managers need access and whether permissions should vary by role or location.
Include the network and cabling
IP cameras depend on reliable network connections and suitable power arrangements. An assessment should cover cable routes, switches, recording equipment, and the existing network. Share any issues with dropped connections, missing recordings, or unreliable remote access.
Make support part of the plan
Clarify who supports the cameras, recorder, mobile app, and network after installation. Ask what documentation and training are provided, including camera names, equipment models, and footage export instructions.
What to have ready
- A floor plan and the areas you want to see
- Existing camera and recorder models
- Nighttime lighting conditions and recording needs
- Who needs access and what is currently not working
