Network infrastructure guide

Data cabling and network planning for DFW businesses

A well-planned network supports everyday business work, phone calls, cameras, and Wi-Fi. Envoy no longer installs cabling or services networks. This guide can help you describe the work you need before contacting a current provider.

Start with locations and connected devices

Mark workstations, meeting rooms, printers, phones, cameras, and wireless access points on a floor plan. Identify the network equipment location and any areas needing new connections. A clear device list helps a contractor estimate routes, outlet locations, and the project scope.

Ask for installation details and documentation

Discuss cable selection, pathway access, labeling, termination, and testing with the installer. Request a written scope describing what is included and the documentation you will receive. Avoid choosing cabling solely by the lowest price when the actual installation requirements differ.

Make network closets easier to maintain

For a cleanup project, share photos of racks, patch panels, switches, and existing labels. Ask how active connections will be identified and how downtime will be coordinated. Organized labeling and connection records make later maintenance easier.

Separate Wi-Fi coverage from internet service

The internet provider brings connectivity to your location. Your internal network distributes that connection around the building. Slow Wi-Fi, unreliable calls, and a provider outage can require different remedies; describe the affected area, devices, and timing to help a provider assess the cause.

What to have ready

  • Floor plans and the number of desired connections
  • Photos of existing racks, switches, and patch panels
  • Areas with weak Wi-Fi or unreliable wired connections
  • Building access requirements and acceptable maintenance windows
